This one was really a media creation. More than that: It was a media wet dream.

Dreading the Gush-Bore face-off 2000, which promises to be as scintillating as the last PBS Pledge-a-bration, the media floated and then exploded one off-the-cuff remark by Harlem Congressman Charlie Rangel. Now Hillary-Rudy is a reality, a New York state senate race that promises to out-Nielsen the presidential snoozer and is already beginning to erectify the nipples on MSNBCeebees holed up in Absecon, New Jersey, expending all their birthday wishes on their desire for an electoral version of a fight from Mad Max. "Two men enter, one man leaves!"

Well why not? A year ago such a hope could be shrugged off as wishful thinking, but Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Giuliani have shown themselves to be so malleable, the media in this case resembles nothing so much as the little shits in the schoolyard whose snipes and gossip ("Did you hear what Hillary said about you??!") belie Machiavellian prowess. So we herein offer highlights of the pending Empire-state nail-biter, with confidence that today's wishful media thinking is tomorrow's page-one, above-the-fold Times analysis.
